RALPH FIENNES, ACTOR: She was a married woman who had not yet known love.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CYNTHIA TORNQUIST, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): In a time of war, they found passion.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE END OF THE AFFAIR")

FIENNES: Tell me again.

JULIANNE MOORE, ACTRESS: I love you.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

TORNQUIST: "The End of The Affair" is based on Graham Greene's story of love, adultery and jealousy. When the book was published in 1951, some Britons believed it was inspired by the author's own affair with a married woman.

NEIL JORDAN, WRITER/DIRECTOR: It's one of the most kind of erotic books ever written. It's directly affecting. It's a study of male jealousy, and it's a study of female compassion.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE END OF THE AFFAIR")

MOORE: How can you be jealous of Henry?

FIENNES: He has you. I don't.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FIENNES: He's consumed by a passion, and a jealousy and almost a hatred for the husband of the woman he loves. But he has a kind of rye and honest perception of it all, including his own anger.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE END OF THE AFFAIR")

STEPHEN REA, ACTOR: Will you let me pass?

FIENNES: You don't want them? Photographs? Names? Love letters?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

REA: Well, at first he's in denial, as they say. He pretends it's not happening. He has to make a decision about what he's going to do about it, and he decides instead of being confrontational or critical to just put up with it.

TORNQUIST: The film is set in London during World War II. When a bomb nearly kills Fiennes' character, his lover begs God to spare him.

MOORE: I think that people will understand what it means to put somebody's well-being before your desires.

TORNQUIST: Several scenes recreate London during the height of the war.

A double pulled off this dangerous stunt for Ray Fiennes, but there were no doubles for this scene.

FIENNES: I was soaked endlessly, taken away and dried, and then put back in the rain. It's a kind of Chinese torture.

TORNQUIST: Being exposed to the elements was nothing compared to another kind of exposure: partial nude scenes.

(on camera): Do you need a sense of humor when you're doing a love scene?

FIENNES: Yes you do. You sure do. You're in awkward positions, and it stops to be spontaneous.

TORNQUIST (voice-over): Passion is all illusion in the movies.
