The actor found it distressing to get inside a killer's mind. "There's a guy who's written a lot of books, an ex-FBI ( news - web sites) profiler who took on all these different cases," Fiennes said. "After a while, I get the idea. I don't need to keep immersing myself in this stuff because it gets to be too much. I found that after a while, I couldn't (continue) reading it."
He also bulked up for the role because his character, Francis Dolarhyde, is described as a bodybuilder in Thomas Harris' book.
"Although I couldn't get as big as a bodybuilder should be, I tried to put on as much weight in the right places as I could," Fiennes said. "I worked with (the trainer who helped) Tom Hanks lose weight for 'Castaway.' He kicked my ass every day for two hours, and I had to eat a lot. It was quite a strain."
It took hours for makeup artists to paint the tattoo that covers Fiennes'
entire backside in the movie. "It took seven to eight hours to apply them,
four or five people drawing on my back, butt and leg. I couldn't move the
muscles in my back so the tattoo could stretch out," he said.
