DSS167 Disk Drives

Honeywell SERIES 6000/600/400

DSS167 REMOVABLE DISK STORAGE SUBSYSTEM

The Type DSS167 Removable Disk Storage Subsystem is designed for use in Series 6000, 600, and 400 systems. The Type DSS167 provides intermediate size, modular, auxiliary systems storage. Each disk spindle within this disk storage subsystem uses as storage media the industry standard eleven-high disk pack. These disk packs can store up to 15,360,000 characters, are conveniently removed, safely and easily stored off-line, and readily remounted when data access is required.

STORAGE CAPACITY

Each disk pack stores 15,360,000 6-bit characters. On-line storage per disk subsystem is 92,160,000 6-bit characters, expandable to 122,880,000 6-bit characters.

TRANSFER RATE

208,000 6-bit characters per second.

POSITIONING TIME

Average access time is 75 milliseconds. Average latency time is 12.5 milliseconds.

DISK PACK

This removable disk pack is compatible with the 2316 pack. It consists of eleven 14-inch disks mounted on a common shaft and enclosed in an easy-to-handle carrying case. Recording surfaces are kept dust free since access to the surface is available only when the cartridge is mounted on the disk spindle. Twenty surfaces are available for data recording.

DISK AND RECORD LAYOUT

Data is grouped in a total of 40,000 continuously addressable sectors of 384 characters each. A total of 200 sectors (76,800 characters) are accessible in each actuator position or cylinder.
Bits per character 6
Characters per sector 384
Sectors per track 10
Characters per track 3,840
Tracks per cylinder 20
Characters per disk cylinder 76,800
Cylinders per disk pack 200
Characters per disk pack 15,360,000

CONTROLLER

The controller handles either six on-line disk spindles or eight on- line disk spindles with one spare disk spindie. Command decoding, data checking features, and data flow control are provided in the controller hardware.

SIMULTANEITY

With one seek per disk unit, this subsystem can perform up to 8 simultaneous seeks.

DUAL CHANNEL OPTION

Provided in the controller logic is an option for a nonsimultaneous dual channel that permits two processing systems to share the same disk storage subsystem.

BLOCK COUNT OPTION

Hardware block count provides file protection where multiple files share the same cylinder. Such blocks — or sectors — are specified by the processing system and can vary from 1 to 200.

DIMENSIONS

Disk Unit Dimensions - (3 disk spindles): 38 inches high; 72 inches wide; 31 inches deep.

DSS167 Controller Dimensions: 72 inches high; 45 inches wide; 29 inches deep.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

DSS167 (90-million character capacity) - 6,910 watts

DSS167 (120-million character capacity) - 9,710 watts

AIR CONDITIONING

DSS167 (90-million character capacity) — 30,850 BTU/HR
