Impostures

March 6 - 27, 1999

Kamila Wozniakowska's painting reveals a fascination for communication and the complexity of human relations. In her work she examines both the question of the transmission and interpretation of the narrative in particular and the narrative power of the image in general. Through paintings made up of a series of vignettes, she explores the different aspects of manipulation and falsification inherent in the recounting of events.

The works in her most recent series "Impostures" are, in essence, contemporary versions of the genre painting, in which the artist makes use of the narrative potential of the serial image. The theme of these works stems from the conflict which exists between real events and the interpretation of these events as inscribed in our collective unconscious by those who represent them. Through whimsical and often humorous scenes which allow many possible levels of interpretation, these paintings reveal the dramatic gap between our own life experience and what remains of it in the records left for posterity.

The artist would like to acknowledge the financial support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
