For You

May 1 - 28, 1999

Liliana Porter's artistic output, which over the years has taken various forms, questions the frontier between reality and its representation and her most recent work has centred around photography, film and video. Taking her basic imagery from mass culture, her studio portraits of toys, souvenirs or kitsch ornaments are at once minimalist still lifes in which dialogues are set up between the appropriated characters, and conceptual works which deal with issues of representation and artifice.

"The theme of this series of photographs and objects is dialogue. Dialogue between dissimilar beings, or better yet, between fictional beings (toys or various figurines). A dialogue between representations. But then, what are they saying? What are they thinking? What are they asking? They are representations of representations, but so is everything. They don't say anything, but, in principle, nothing ever says anything. The subtitles, translations, meanings, explanations, come later. Photography, with its pretension to objectivity, and the objects themselves, are indications of a precision whose ultimate meaning eludes us. Yet it is at this point that all creation begins. Upon the interpretation of the simulacrum. The aesthetic experience, Borges said, is imminent revelation. Enjoy." - Liliana Porter
