The conceptual work of Marcello Mondazzi is located somewhere between the two-dimensional arts of printing or drawing and sculpture as the artist in fact indicates in several works which he calls "virtual sculptures" or "projects for sculptures".
An accomplished printmaker, Mondazzi incorporates metal plates which are etched and cut into geometric shapes to appear three-dimensional, uses lampblack, and "etches" into the sheets of plexiglass which are superimposed over these constructions. Traces of rust remain on the outer surfaces, where metal has been burned into melted resin. It is the most architectonic of Mondazzi's work, and perhaps the most complex in terms of technique - the artist seems to manipulate his media in a way which itself comments on creation, especially in his use of fire as a major component in this creation, a component which leaves only its trace.
But while he is exploring new limits of media and technique, the subject matter of this work is surprisingly fundamental; the geometric building blocks of architectural construction. Inspired by contemplation of the city and the urban landscape which is created from basic shapes and forms, these works read like ambiguous three-dimensional blueprints. They leave us in calm contemplation of the nature of creativity and human construction.
