New Work

January 9 - 30, 1999

While Grassi's most recent work in oil on paper continues to draw on modernism and minimalism it also remains intimately linked to the body. Pursuing the metaphor of the work of art as body, the body which retains traces of and reveals its history on skin, she challenges the boundaries between text, figuration and abstraction.

In many ways, these new works may be seen as a continuation of her scar series project begun in 1996 in which Grassi explored the process of transformation from wound to scar and how it is linked to her own painting process, where layer upon layer of paint is used to build the surface like a translucent skin. Each work bears the residue of a physical presence on a given set of days, days that are recorded through the act of painting. It is the act of painting then, rather than the painting or the painter, that is highlighted.

Antonietta Grassi has exhibited extensively in Canada, the United States and Italy. This exhibition will represent a series of work completed at the Banff Centre for the Arts, where she participated in a resident artist program for women artists in the summer of 1998.
