Works on Paper
November 1997
Chia is one of the best known artists to emerge from Italy in the 1980s.
The large scale of his painted works and the strength and monumentality
of his figures, as well as his bold use of colour, make his art powerful
and memorable, full of classical resonance and lasting iconography. These works on paper combine Chia's spontaneity of gesture with the
deliberateness of the printing process. The intensity of the colours
and the solidity of line ground these works, while the floating quality
of the figures themselves make them seem unreal, suspended in space
and frozen in time. The classical poses from the Italian art of Chia's origins have been
combined with images from the American collective consciousness, blending
the dynamism of popular imagery and mass society with the isolation and
solitude of the static figure. An Italian artist who now lives in New York,
Chia incorporates elements of both Western cultures into his work with
incredible ease while creating works that are compositionally complex
and visually seductive.Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 - 5:00
